Devens Eco-Efficiency Center Receives Achievement Award

June 2010

The Devens Eco-Efficiency Center recently received an Outstanding Environmental-Energy Achievement Award from the Environmental Business Council, New England (EBC). The award was presented in recognition of the development and operation of the Devens Eco-Efficiency Center and the EcoStar program. Senator Jamie Eldridge, Chairman Bill Marshall and other distinguished members of the Devens Enterprise Commission (DEC), DEC Director Peter Lowitt and other Board Members of the Center were all on hand to witness the award presentation during the EBC’s 20th Annual Meeting and Awards Celebration, held at The Fairmont Copley Plaza in Boston.

EcoStar was launched in 2005 to promote sustainable development by integrating economic, social and environmental needs while maintaining and enhancing the natural resource base in the Devens area. This green

business certification program helps members minimize ecological impacts, improve community and customer relations, and gain recognition in the marketplace for their commitment to being a more responsible entity.

The Devens Eco-Efficiency Center provides educational forums, enables collaboration and offers technical assistance that helps area businesses and organizations implement new programs and procedures to reduce environmental impacts as well as lower operating costs. The Center helps establishments improve their environmental and energy performance by building recycling/reuse programs, launching energy conservation and efficiency endeavors, and hosting workshops and roundtables that enable business leaders to stay informed of best management practices for pollution prevention and resource efficiencies. This non-profit entity was established in 2008 to respond to the growing interest in sustainability issues across all business sectors.

According to Dona Neely, Executive Director of the Devens Eco-Efficiency Center, representatives of the Center are “thrilled and honored to receive this award and recognition. This acknowledgement will strengthen the awareness and credibility of our programs and services, which will help increase the value that we are able to deliver to the community.”

The Environmental Business Council was organized in 1990 and was “the first organization in the United States established to support and foster the development of the environmental industry.”
