Devens Eco-Efficiency Center to Help Businesses Reduce Waste and save Resources and Money

The Devens Eco-Efficiency Center has received a Solid Waste Management Grant of $25,100 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Rural Development Utilities Program to provide a range of programs and technical assistance designed to enable businesses to save money by reducing the amount of solid waste they send to the landfill.

Services to be made available free of charge to the commercial, industrial, and not-for-profit entities in Devens until September 2012, include:

Q Waste audits and waste reduction plans;

Q Educational materials, workshops and engagement programs;

Q Establishment or expansion of internal recycle programs;

Q Organics separation program for facilities with food waste;

Q Repurpose of reusable materials in the waste stream; and

Q Community-wide pallet recycling program.

Learn more about this grant.  The Devens Eco-Efficiency Center has helped firms reduce their waste management costs by as much as 50% by implementing programs that reduce waste, increase recycling, and divert materials with reuse potential. The Center’s Great Exchange program enables partnerships that repurpose nearly 100 tons of materials annually and provide participants with more than $70,000 in savings from avoided expenses.

The mission of the Devens Eco-Efficiency Center is to help establishments reduce operating costs and environmental impacts by delivering education, enabling collaboration and providing technical services. Dona Neely, Executive Director of the non-profit entity, explains “the goal of the services that the Center provides is to help make resources – economic, material and environmental – last longer.” The organization was created in 2007 to expand the sustainability assistance that was being provided through the EcoStar program.
